Larrabee State Park has quickly become one of our favorite weekend getaways—and it’s surprisingly kid-friendly. Tucked into a lush forest just outside of Bellingham, WA, the campground is a great basecamp for families traveling with young ones. We recently spent a few nights here with our two kids, and it checked all the boxes for comfort, fun, and adventure.
Camping Comfortably with Kids
We stayed at the Larrabee State Park campground in our truck camper, and it was just what we needed. The sites are nestled in a beautiful wooded area that gives you that classic Pacific Northwest forest vibe. One of the biggest perks for RV travelers: full hookups. Having power and water made things so much easier, especially with two little ones in tow.
That said, it’s worth noting that the campground is close to train tracks, a road, and under a flight path. You’ll definitely hear trains and the occasional airplane overhead. For us, it wasn’t a problem—we were all so tired after a day of exploring that we slept right through it. Nature therapy for the win!

Playground + Easy Access to Adventure
One of the first things our kids noticed? The playground. It’s an easy walk from the campground, and it quickly became a go-to spot in the mornings and before dinner. Sometimes the simplest things are the biggest hits.
But the real magic happened when we hiked down to the beach at low tide. The trail is short and manageable with little legs, and the reward at the end is huge. The tide pools were alive with sea creatures—crabs, sea stars, snails, oysters, and clamshells galore. Our kids were completely absorbed in exploring the water and searching for tiny treasures. It felt like a mini marine biology lesson wrapped in a whole lot of fun.

Local Flavor: Taylor Shellfish Farm
If you’re in the area, we highly recommend making the short 10-minute drive to Taylor Shellfish Farm. Located right on the water, it’s a great spot to enjoy fresh, local seafood with an incredible view. You can choose to dine in and order oysters and drinks from their rotating menu (check their website before you go!), or purchase shellfish to cook back at your campsite.
We decided to grab some clams to-go since our kids are obsessed with them, and cooking them back at the camper made for a fun and tasty family dinner. It was the perfect way to end a day full of adventure.

Final Thoughts
If you’re traveling with kids and want a spot that balances convenience with outdoor beauty, Larrabee State Park is a solid choice. Between the comfort of full hookups, easy trails, beachside discoveries, and fresh local seafood nearby, it’s the kind of place where everyone—parents included—can slow down and enjoy nature.
